OUR GRID/GROWING BETWEEN THE LINES
“De onzekere leeftijdsfase van deze groeiende groep jongeren tegen de strakke en gestructureerde achtergrond van de geplande woonwijk fascineert mij als fotograaf en bewoner van IJburg.”
De Amsterdamse wijk IJburg bestaat uit diverse deeleilanden met elk zijn eigen sfeer en bebouwing en met elk zijn eigen jongeren. Het doel van deze serie is om een beeld te geven van de explosief groeiende groep jongeren tussen 13 en 19 jaar.
Voor allen geldt dat ze op deze leeftijd nog op zoek zijn naar hun eigen ‘bouwtekening’ op het juist van te voren zo uitgekiend en berekend gebouwde IJburg.
Op basis van dit plan werd mij de foto opdracht van het Stadsarchief en Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst 2016 verstrekt. Verschillende locaties op IJburg vormen - elk ongeveer een uur lang - het decor van diverse groepen jongeren. De locaties zijn van tevoren zorgvuldig gescout. In elke groep staat één hoofdpersoon centraal. Op deze gekadreerde plekken komen gedurende dit uur zijn of haar vrienden langs met hun scooters, fietsen, skateboards et cetera. Via school of social media zijn ze geïnstrueerd om op dat tijdstip naar deze setting te komen. Als fotograaf maak ik vooral contact met de hoofdpersoon en laat ik zijn/haar vrienden hun gang gaan. Mijn hoofdpersoon is de spil. Op hem of haar ligt het accent, door middel van licht en plaatsing - apart van de groep, vooraan, achteraan, etc. Het zijn locaties waar je op het eerste gezicht niet veel mensen zou verwachten. Dit enigszins surrealistisch effect zoek ik bewust op als voorafschaduwing van de groei van de jongeren in de wijk die de komende jaren pas echt gaat spelen.

The IJburg district in Amsterdam consists of various small islands, each with their own atmosphere and architecture and each with their own group of youngsters aged between 13 and 19 years.
All of them are still searching for their own ‘blueprint’ within the very structured and planned architecture of IJburg.
Based on this plan, I was given the photo assignment by ‘The City Archive and the Amsterdam Foundation for Arts 2016’. Different locations on IJburg were the decor - each of them for about an hour- of various youth groups. The locations have been carefully selected beforehand. In every group, one person is the main character. In this hour, at these outlined locations, his or her friends will pop round with their scooters, bikes, skateboards and so on. Via their school or social media, they have been instructed to come to this location at a set time. As the photographer, I mainly interact with the main character and let the friends do what they want. My main character is the spindle. The emphasis is on him or her, through the use of light and positioning - away from the group, in the front or at the back etcetera. The locations are places where you wouldn’t expect many people at first sight. I am deliberately looking for this slightly surrealistic effect as a prefiguration of the growth of the youngsters in the district that only really will take effect in the years to come.
